As a kid one of the most fascinating things to me was space. I just couldn’t fathom how something could look so close, yet be so far away. I could lay on a bed of dampening grass for hours at night staring up at the sky and marvel at all its’ secrets. One of the most majestic things of space is The Moon. How it races to the top of the sky just to descend back to slumber. How it vanquishes the night with it’s brightness. How some nights it seems meek and shy and others it is close enough to touch. Clearly as I grew older I started to understand why things seemed the way they were and childhood mystery gave way to truths and science. However, one thing that science and physics can’t take away are the memories of how special that was to me.
25 some years later enter Bombyx with a board game that brings back all of those fun memories in a nice little package. Bombyx is a French gaming studio with a few releases under their belt, but this is Catch the Moon. A quick and easy board game that can be played with anything from 2-6 players and games average about 20 minutes, depending on how goofy you get.
The basic premise of the game is to take roll a die and to stack wooden ladder game pieces on a cloud. If you cause ladders to fall you get moon tears. The game is completed when there aren’t any moon tears or ladder pieces left. This game literally has 30 seconds worth of setup. The rules are extremely simple yet it gives such a diverse amount of replayability. This is extremely rare in today’s board game scene! We’re used to board games with 3.2 million cardboard tokens that you have to keep track of. 30 dice that have to be rolled and 75 of the sweetest unpainted minis that you have to painstakingly place on maps for 25 minutes before you’re even ready to play! Don’t get me wrong, I’m a board gamer. I love this, however sometimes I just want to open the box and relive my childhood dreams of trying to climb high enough to Catch the Moon.
All it takes is some skillfully placed ladders, a good sense of balance, and a touch of imagination. The Moon is eager for you to reach her, but she’s sensitive: she will shed a tear at the slightest misstep in your climb. With the right mix of risk taking and caution, you will become the most agile of dreamers.
As you can see from the pictures it’s extremely simple in its execution. Provides enough challenge for most and best yet? It’s for ages 6 and up! That means the entire family can sit down after doing dishes and jam out a couple games and still have time to finish up homework before the night gets away from them.
This is it kids. This is the kind of game that can appeal to anyone and can be played by everyone. It’s going fast, and with Bombyx being the size they are you’re going to want to grab your copy before they become extremely difficult to get! Don’t let go of your childhood wonder! Take hold of it tonight! Head over to the Web store or stop by one of our physical locations and Catch the Moon for yourself!
